Handle an overpayment: keep it as credit or pay it back

When a client pays more than they owe, hold the extra as credit for the next invoice, or refund it with proof.

Why this matters

An overpayment is your client's money. Holding it as credit, or refunding it with a record, keeps your books and your client's balance in agreement, instead of leaving an unexplained extra on an invoice.

The steps

  1. Overpayments and client creditSee where the extra payment went and how much credit the client has.
  2. Apply credit to an invoiceUse the credit to pay all or part of another invoice.
  3. Record a refund to a client from client creditRecord the refund you paid back to the client from their credit.
  4. Void a client refundVoid a refund recorded by mistake; the amount returns to client credit.

Good to know

  • Moodiri records refunds; it doesn't move money. Pay the refund yourself, then record it.
  • Card refunds made in Stripe are picked up automatically, so don't record them again.
  • Credit imported from QuickBooks can't be refunded in Moodiri.
