# Handle an overpayment: keep it as credit or pay it back

> When a client pays more than they owe, hold the extra as credit for the next invoice, or refund it with proof.

## Why this matters

An overpayment is your client's money. Holding it as credit, or refunding it with a record, keeps your books and your client's balance in agreement, instead of leaving an unexplained extra on an invoice.

## The steps

1. [Overpayments and client credit](https://docs.moodiri.com/invoices/overpayments-and-client-credit): See where the extra payment went and how much credit the client has.
2. [Apply credit to an invoice](https://docs.moodiri.com/invoices/apply-client-credit-to-an-invoice): Use the credit to pay all or part of another invoice.
3. [Record a refund to a client from client credit](https://docs.moodiri.com/invoices/record-a-client-refund): Record the refund you paid back to the client from their credit.
4. [Void a client refund](https://docs.moodiri.com/invoices/void-a-client-refund): Void a refund recorded by mistake; the amount returns to client credit.

## Good to know

- Moodiri records refunds; it doesn't move money. Pay the refund yourself, then record it.
- Card refunds made in Stripe are picked up automatically, so don't record them again.
- Credit imported from QuickBooks can't be refunded in Moodiri.
