Fix a mistake on an invoice you already sent

Correct a sent invoice the right way: void and reissue, refund items, or fix the payment, instead of editing it in place.

Why this matters

Once an invoice is sent, your client has seen it and it's part of your financial record. Correcting it through a void, a refund or a payment correction keeps a clear history of what changed and why, so your books and your client's copy never disagree.

The steps

  1. Void, void & duplicate, or delete an invoiceVoid a sent invoice (or void and duplicate it) to start again; delete only drafts.
  2. Refund items: keep as client credit or refund to the clientRefund individual items, keeping the amount as client credit or refunding it.
  3. Edit, correct, reverse or void a paymentEdit, correct or reverse a payment recorded with the wrong amount or date.
  4. Refunds and correctionsUnderstand replacement invoices and how the invoice history shows each change.

Good to know

  • Reverse recorded payments and applied credits before you void or delete an invoice.
  • A correction replacement can't be deleted; it's settled from client credit.
  • A payment can't be reversed while it's still processing. Wait until it settles, then reverse it.
