# Copy a file to another project

> Reuse a document on another project, such as a standard contract or a spec PDF, without downloading and uploading it again. The original stays where it is.

## Why use it

Some documents belong on more than one job: your standard design agreement, a
vendor's care guide, or a finish schedule you reuse. Copying puts the file on the
other project in a couple of clicks, with its category and description, while the
original stays on its own project untouched.

## When to use it

- **Standard documents**: contracts and terms you give every client.
- **Shared reference files**: a care guide or spec PDF that applies to a second project.
- **Starting points**: a schedule from a past project you want to adapt.

To move a file instead of copying it, change its **Project** in the detail panel. See
[Files](https://docs.moodiri.com/files-and-documents/files#rename-download-archive-and-restore).

## Before you start

- Any teammate can copy a file.
- The file must not be archived. Restore it first if it is.
- The target project must already exist.

## Steps

1. Open **Files**, or a project's documents, and choose the file to open its detail panel.
2. Choose **Document actions** (the three dots), then **Copy to project...**.
3. Pick the project under **Select project**, and a room under **Select space** if you want one.
4. Keep the suggested name, which adds "(copy)", or type your own, such as *Design agreement, Lombard*.
5. Choose **Copy**. The copy keeps the category and description and starts internal.

## What happens next

- The copy appears in the target project's documents, and in **Files**, with the name you chose.
- It keeps the original's category and description, and starts internal: not shared with the client.
- The original file is unchanged.

## Limits

- Archived files can't be copied. Restore the file from **Archived** first.
- Refund proofs can't be copied; they stay with their refund record.
- The space you pick must belong to the project you pick. Pick the project first, then its space.

## Troubleshooting

- **Copy failed**: the copy didn't complete. Check that the file isn't archived and try again.
- **Source file no longer exists**: the original file is missing. Upload it again instead.

## Questions

### Does the copy stay linked to the original?

No. The copy is a separate file. Renaming, sharing or archiving one doesn't change the other.

### Is the copy shared with the new project's client?

No. Copies always start internal, even if the original was shared. Turn on **Share with client** on the copy when you're ready.
